Easter

Turning East (finding Easer in the sunrise)

The morning I wrote this I was up early to walk my dog, Judah. We started our walk by heading north and as I looked to my right, the sky had just begun to turn pink. I said to Judah (yes, out loud), "This one is going to be pretty. We'll see it on our way home." Our walk then turned west where the sky was still very dark. You wouldn't know that it was almost morning when we started walking in that direction. About 20 minutes later, we finally made our way to the homestretch. We turned east and were met with the gorgeous sunrise the sky had hinted at.

It made me think about Easter weekend. The life and ministry of Jesus were incredible. They were full of miracles and authoritative teachings that amazed people. He brought the kingdom of heaven near and here, giving us a taste of what is to come when He makes all things new one day. But that light must have seemed all but forgotten as the story "turned west" into the dark sky of Jesus' arrest after the Last Supper and crucifixion on Good Friday. Saturday must have seemed like all hope was lost and all light had been extinguished. But that wasn't the end of the story. The light was becoming brighter and brighter in the east, it just wasn't fully visible yet.

And then Sunday came. Humanity turned east and got the first look at the Messiah, the King of Kings, the Saviour of the World, and how everything had been leading to His resurrection. We saw that death itself had been defeated and the victory had been won.

Easter is the ultimate reminder that God is at work in powerful ways, even if our lives and our stories are "pointed west" and we don't see all that He is doing. We celebrate Easter because we have full assurance that He is risen indeed and we are called to join Him in His victory.

I'm looking forward to "proclaiming His death until He comes" (1 Cor. 11:26) on Friday and worshiping the King of Kings with you on Sunday!

Easter Dinner (you're invited!)

As Easter approaches, I am reflecting on the things I love about this season. From the solemnity of Good Friday to the uncontainable joy of Easter Sunday, each moment carries significance and meaning.

Many of us gather with family and friends around a feast-filled table to celebrate Easter. Although traditions vary, at our house Easter dinner is not complete without braided Easter bread, which my kids help me make and reminds us of the eternal qualities of God in the Trinity. While the food is a highlight, it's not about the food, but about spending time with loved ones.

This year, we're excited to invite our church family and extended community to join us for Easter Dinner. We understand that Easter can be challenging for some who may not have friends or family to share it with. Whether you're new to Canada, Kitchener or following Jesus, we want to provide a welcoming space for everyone. So, we're setting the table with room for anyone who wants to join us for Easter Dinner, ensuring no one is left alone.

Easter Dinner will take place shortly after the conclusion of our Easter Sunday Service, in the fellowship hall. We’ll provide the main course, rolls and dessert, and you can sign up to bring potatoes, casserole or a salad!

Our heart is to ensure that no one who wants to celebrate in community is left behind. Please invite those who may be interested and sign up to come yourself. Register by Sunday, March 17th at freedomkw.com/events.

I can't wait to see you there!

Easter is VERY Good News (who do you know that needs to hear it?)

On Sunday we will be sharing some very good news. The best news, in fact. He is risen indeed! We are so privileged to know that regardless of any bad news that we've received in our lives and no matter what comes our way, we have this good news each and every day as our anchor. Thank you, Jesus!

On Friday, Scott Corkill will be sharing from the Gospel of John with the headline "Jesus is Love". We will gather around the communion emblems, proclaiming His death until He comes (1 Corinthians 11:26) and consider what the "headline" of our lives is because of Christ.

On Saturday, we will rest, considering that quiet and grief-filled day of the first Easter weekend but with the full knowledge that the story doesn't end in death.

On Sunday, we celebrate. As Pope John Paul II said, "We are an Easter people and hallelujah is our song!"

If there is someone you'd like to invite, we want you to know that they will hear the message of the gospel on Friday and Sunday. There is toddler care for the littlest in our Freedom family and all other ages will be involved in the service. We've been mindful of this in our planning and have been intentional about how we can keep our Freedom kids engaged.

We have an easy invitation card ready for you on our website and lots of FAQs answered if someone is new to our church. freedomkw.com/easter

Also, we will be livestreaming on Friday and Sunday. That might be a great way to invite someone who is hesitant about attending in person. Details for that are always on the homepage of our website.

Someone grabbed a photo of some of our team during our final music rehearsal on Tuesday night... it makes my heart happy. I can't wait to see you this weekend and celebrate Jesus together!

Indeed!

Palm Sunday to Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Beyond (Holy Week begins...)

It's time, once again, for palm fronds. This is your warning that you may get hit with a palm branch on Sunday morning if you are with us for our in-person service. We hope you don't, but there are no guarantees! We'll be encouraging our Freedom kids to grab a palm branch and wave it as we sing "Hosanna". Why? Because it is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.

Holy Week (or Passion Week) is the traditional name for the week leading up to and including the crucifixion of Jesus. The Church looks back at the events of each day and in a way, relives them, recognizing the significance of each step Jesus took on His way to the cross. We did a series on this last Easter - you can check it out here.

As we get ready for Palm Sunday, I want to invite you into this journey to the cross. Use each day to prepare your heart for Easter weekend. Here are some ways that you can do this:

  1. Join our Holy Week reading plan in YouVersion.

  2. Watch this video about Holy Week to understand it better.

  3. Listen to the messages from our 2022 series "The Passion".

Looking forward to reflecting and celebrating with you this season,

The Season Before Easter (today is Ash Wednesday)

This week's devotional is coming out a day earlier than usual. Why? Because today is an important day on the church calendar. It's the first day of Lent. Our church tradition doesn't always emphasize some of the key days on the liturgical Christian calendar but there is a lot of value in understanding why Christ-followers throughout the centuries have celebrated seasons as an important part of their faith journey.

As I did last year, I wanted to share a great article I found that simply introduces the idea of Lent and how it can help us to prepare our hearts for Easter. It's about much more than giving up coffee or chocolate for 40 days... it's about examining our hearts, recognizing our need for a Saviour and being ready to celebrate His sacrifice and triumph on Easter weekend.

Perhaps this can be something new and challenging in your journey into what's next in your spiritual life. Join us this Lenten season as we intentionally turn our attention toward the cross and the victory Jesus has won.

And in case you're wondering, our Easter series begins on March 12: Gospel.

Blessings,

Pastor Tracy

A Moment for Gratitude (thanks to all who helps us celebrate Easter!)

After a weekend like the one we just had, I get reflective. So many of you made a point to say something encouraging to me about our Good Friday or Easter Sunday services. My heart was so full from knowing that what was intentionally curated for the weekend made a connection to your lives in some way. Thank you, Jesus.

But more than that, I know what it took to make those moments special and believe me when I tell you that for weeks leading up to Easter, the body of Christ was in action, each member using their gifts for the common good.

Thank you to everyone who stayed late on a Sunday night in February to brainstorm ideas, features and songs.

Thank you to Matt who helped to craft each moment of the services from a musical and production perspective, learned songs, tracked down media and led so well on the weekend. #allthethings

Thank you to the worship team who prepared weeks in advance and set aside extra time to rehearse together - Adam, Juno, Matt, Shay, Talitha, Sara and Leanna. And thank you to the tech team of Walt, Brad, Malachi, Vaughn, Jide and Nate for spending time in rehearsals and making sure that the message of the weekend was easily seen and heard.

Thank you to Erin and Margaret who were able to take all of the ideas, interpret them and make them work - devotionals, scripture readings, kids features, communion, and "graves into gardens." So grateful for this staff.

Thank you to everyone who created and hosted our Spring Photo Booth, to bless both our community and our church family with memories from this weekend: Erin, Sandra, Pernilla, Nicole, Dave, Monica, Kari, Joke and Alicia.

Thank you to everyone who lent your voice, talent and heart to the services in so many other ways: Pastor Del, Jide, Chris & Ruthie (who also created the Good Friday service with me - grateful!).

We had excellent Hosts all weekend - both in person and OFF Campus, not to mention those who worked entirely behind the scenes counting the offering and taking care of the youngest members of our Freedom family on Sunday.

And to each and every one of you who invited someone to hear the message of gospel this weekend (whether they attended or not), who brought someone with you to a service or who prayed with us that Jesus would be known, I am deeply grateful to you and for you.

This, church, is the body of Christ. I am so glad to be a part of it and I'm glad to be serving this community alongside of each of you.

He is risen indeed!

Getting Ready for Easter (resources for the kids... and you!)

It doesn't matter what age you are, we all need to understand the Easter story. Some of us grew up hearing it but for some of us, it's a new story and maybe a bit of a mystery. We do our best to tell the story when we gather on Good Friday and Easter Sunday but it's worth hearing it again and again, making sure that everyone has a chance to understand how important the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is.

In today's devo I've linked some videos to help give you an overview of everything we are remembering and celebrating this weekend. They are great for kids and I encourage you to show them to the kids in your life and ask them if they have any questions.

But let's be honest, they're great for adults, too! These might act as a primer for our services or maybe there is someone in your life who is asking questions about what Easter means. Go ahead and share the links - they are all free on YouTube and easy to access.

Here again is the schedule for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Freedom:

Good Friday, April 15 @ 10am
Family Communion Service (in person and livestream)

Saturday, April 16 @ 9:30-11:30am
Spring Photo Booth (We've invited our neighbours! You can come too!)

Easter Sunday, April 17 @ 10am
Family Service (in person and livestream) with Childcare for ages 0-3
Spring Photo Booth will also be available before and after the service.

We also encourage you to invite someone to join you in person or online. Let your friends, family and neighbours know about our services and invite them to sign up for the photo booth. You can get an invitation card from the church or point them to freedomkw.com/easter2022.

Remembering, Proclaiming and Celebrating (a look ahead at Easter weekend)

Are you making plans for Easter weekend? If you are part of a family that's anything like mine you've already talked about the menu, the venue and the seating. (Spiral ham, my house, room for 12. By the way, Rob, if I've forgotten to tell you this, everyone's coming to our place for Easter Sunday dinner!)

In church life, we start planning for Easter weekend in February. To put it mildly, it's kind of a big deal. We mark Good Friday and Easter Sunday with special significance because what happened through the death and resurrection of Jesus has literally changed our lives - both today and for eternity. And so, we remember, we proclaim His death until He comes and we celebrate His victory over death and the grave. I get excited; I know you understand.

With that in mind, let me tell you what we're planning for Easter weekend in hopes that you will be able to prepare your hearts and calendars to join us.

Good Friday, April 15 @ 10am
Family Communion Service (in person and livestream)

Saturday, April 16 @ 9:30-11:30am

Easter Weekend and What's Next (He is risen indeed!)

Church - we have an amazing opportunity in the next few days. Similarly to Christmas, Easter is a time when people who don't typically attend church or think about spiritual things are open to coming to church and hearing about Jesus. My question, then, is simple: how can you use this opportunity to share with someone else the incredible life-change you've experienced?

It may be intimidating to think about but really, it can be as simple as a conversation with a neighbour, an invitation to watch our livestream, or a meal dropped off at a door. In all of this, we simply ask God to open our eyes, give us courage and lead us however He wants to.

Here's what's happening at Freedom now and next. Who could you invite to come along and hear about Him?

What is Palm Sunday? (a great reminder as Passion Week begins)

Oh friends, we're almost there. Easter Sunday is so close now and we're about to enter into the Passion Week that starts with Palm Sunday.

While Palm Sunday is fun to celebrate together during a service (and I have a personal love for saying 'palm fronds'!), I thought a reminder about what Palm Sunday is all about would be helpful for us as we step towards Easter together.

I am so grateful that as followers of Christ we are able to celebrate Palm Sunday with a full understanding of how Jesus would accomplish exactly what we needed, not what we expected.

Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

The Lord's Table at Your Table (how to do communion at home)

As we prepare for Easter weekend, you may have heard that our Good Friday communion service is still happening... livestreamed to your home. (FB Live, just like Sunday.)

You might wonder - how is that going to work? I don't know how to do my own communion! What should I say? I'm going to be so awkward!

Never fear. Communion is both simple and profound. It doesn't require any special title or designation to serve it to yourself or your family other than "Follower of Jesus". And if you look forward to it as another act of worship on Friday, it will be beautiful and not awkward.

But also, let me help just a bit.

Adults:

  • Please have some communion emblems prepared before service begins on Friday. Grape juice and bread are great but do your best with what you have. If you need help getting communion emblems to your house, just let us know and we'll do our best to make it happen.

  • I will be reading from 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 . If you can, have your Bible(s) open to that passage so you can read along with me.

  • We'll have a moment for reflection and confession that you can participate in at home. Then I'll lead us through taking the emblems together.

  • The best thing you can do is try and create an atmosphere that allows for these moments to be worshipful, thoughtful, and full of gratitude.

With Kids:

I know that last point in the section above might be hard to do with little ones at home. Blessings on your efforts. :) Margaret is sending out a great resource to help to prepare the kids for taking communion. Here's an excerpt that is helpful for adults and kids alike:

  • During communion you will get a piece of bread and a little bit of juice.

  • When we eat the bread, we remember that Jesus' body was broken for our sins.

  • When we drink the juice, we remember the promise that we can be set free from all sin through Jesus' shed blood.

  • We take a moment to be quiet and think about all of our sins - all the things we need to say "I'm sorry" for, and we ask Jesus to forgive us.

  • We take a moment to pray and say "Thank You, Jesus, for your sacrifice. You have set me free!"

This weekend is going to be beautiful. Truly. With the extra space and quiet that the pandemic has created, we will have the chance to gather and reflect on the cross in new ways. We will be able to look at the suffering of Jesus with fresh perspective, knowing that He understands all of our heartache in our world right now and cares about every fear. We will be given the chance to lament and pour out our hearts to the Man of Sorrows and prepare our hearts for the celebration of Sunday.

I'm looking forward to all of it. See you on Friday at 10:00, gathered around the Lord's Table at your table.

Easter Weekend Celebrations and More! (be in the know)

Ready for a few updates? Here we go!

There is a lot going on at church! Sure, the format of things has changed, but we love how we've been hearing from you and all the ways we are connecting with you.

Please don't forget that if you need help/prayer or want to help/pray, head over to Freedom Responds and let us know. Let's do everything we can to BE THE CHURCH in the middle of this crisis.

I know that many of us are tired or overwhelmed. We are with you and we are for you. We love you and are praying that in the strangeness of these days, when it can be hard to find your footing, you will know the peace and presence of Christ. In any way you can think of, be sure to connect together, encourage one another and share with others the hope you have in Jesus no matter what is happening in the world around us.

The Lord bless and keep you.

How are you different? (this week's call to action!)

In this series we've been celebrating the Word. We had lots of great things planned for 5th Sunday, March 29th, not the least of which was a potluck after the service, but, you know, our plans have definitely changed!

But even in the midst of change (and even better than the dishes that we would have shared that Sunday), we still want to find ways to celebrate the Word. Here's what I'd love - to hear the stories of how Scripture has made an impact in your life. Have you had a moment of encouragement, direction, correction or anything else from reading the Bible?

I can't tell you how helpful it would be to your church family to hear your story.

We don't need to be in the same room to share this kind of celebration.

Here's your call to action. Click this link and tell me about a time when the Bible has made a significant impact in your life. It doesn't need to be long or complicated, just a simple testimony of how incredible the Word of God is that will challenge and encourage others. (I'll be sure to get your permission before we share any story publicly.)

I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to hearing from you. Yeah, you. Don't leave it to someone else. You have a story to tell and we're ready to hear it!

Also, here's an outline of what you can expect from our livestream service on Facebook this week...

  • A couple of songs of worship

  • A kids moment with Miss Margaret

  • A message from Romans 7

  • Closing thoughts and live Q&A with Pastor Tracy

The service will run about 45 minutes. We'll be live a few minutes before 10:00 so jump onto our Facebook page and be sure to CHECK IN, SAY HI in the comments and let your church family know that you're watching with them! Our staff will be online with you to respond to your thoughts, comments and questions as we worship together.

See you on Sunday!

Easter is Coming! (He is risen indeed!)

A month from today is my favourite day of the year - Easter Sunday. We have been working on our special services for Easter weekend and the message series around it for weeks and weeks. No surprise, but I - CANNOT - WAIT.

This year our theme is "Revealing Jesus". Every message is taken from the book of Revelation, specifically the different titles and names that Jesus is called, and what they reveal about who He is. Starting on Palm Sunday and using Revelation as a reference we're going to do our best to reveal Jesus week after week.

The question is: who are you bringing with you to hear about Him this Easter? Is there a co-worker that has been asking you questions about faith this past year? Is there a family member who has shown interest in church lately? Is there a friend who is looking for something more in their life? Whoever it is and whatever their background, Jesus is, in fact, the answer. We believe that with all of our hearts and it is our privilege to shout it from the rooftops as often as we can and definitely in this season.

One month until Easter Sunday. Link arms with your church family and together let's bring the hope of Christ to as many people as we can. Will you join me and bring someone with you?

He is risen indeed!

Part of our mission as this local church is to support global workers (missionaries) in prayer and with finances as they reach around the world with the message of Jesus. And wow, do we ever have some amazing people strategically placed for incredible kingdom impact.

Hector and Ruth Aragon are in Guatemala as an extension of the church in Canada and doing incredible things. I wanted you to get to know them a bit better in this week's email so that you can pray for their ministry, their safety, their needs and their family. Jesus is All (how very extraordinary)

This is no ordinary weekend. In fact, there is nothing ordinary about believing in Jesus. My CP1 group has been reading a very challenging book about discipleship. (The Great Omission by Dallas Willard) Every chapter reminds me of something that perhaps I take for granted in the day-to-day living of life: this life in Christ is actually extraordinary.

When you consider who He is, what He's done, what He's calling us to and what He's promised, well, it's truly extraordinary. That's what we're going to focus on this weekend. He is not just the one who can help us with our problems or give us peace in our circumstances (though He graciously does so), He is the Resurrection and the Life. The. He made a way for us that blows apart our bondages and brings dead things back to life. Real life. Abundant life. Eternal life.

So, as nice as it is to have a four-day weekend and new shoes for the season, here's a thought to fill your heart with gratitude and wonder over the next few days: Jesus is all and He invites us to live an extraordinary life through Him.

Let's celebrate His victory!
