Candles and Carols (pause on Christmas Eve with us)

The thing about December is that there are so many highlights. Everything from walking through Christmas lights to school performances to downtown markets... there are memories to be made everywhere you look.

I mentioned on Sunday that one of my favourite services of the year just happened - our "big" Christmas service with the choir and kids performances (and don't forget about those young adults on the Boomwhackers!). But I have to say that Christmas Eve ranks just a bit higher on my favourites list.

The Christmas Eve service is a sacred space. We will settle in with carols and some beautiful special music, scripture reading and thoughtful reflections on the texts, and light candles to mark the most incredible occasion of Jesus coming to save us.

If you are looking for a few precious moments to centre your heart and thank God for the gift of Jesus, if you are looking for service to invite someone who is not following Him but you'd like to introduce them, or if you are looking to establish traditions in this season that will point your kids to Him, please join us on Christmas Eve. We'd love to share an hour with you in quiet worship.

Trust the Process (embracing small beginnings)

My oldest daughter is helping with the presentation our Freedom Kids will be putting on this Sunday. When she came home after the first rehearsal I asked her how it was going. She said, "It's a 'trust the process' kind of thing." LOL! In other words, it didn't look like much in that first 45 minutes but experience tells us that it will come together in the end.

It made me think about Zechariah 4:10 which says, "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin..." Sometimes the process we're in or the path we're on makes it hard to stay hopeful that God is at work or that it will be worth the effort. But God loves and is present in every part of the journey. Perhaps we could learn to love the process, trust the process, and not be too eager to rush through it.

Last Friday night, I spent three and a half hours in rehearsals. Some of that time was for vocalists getting ready for the coming Sunday, some was for musicians getting ready for this Sunday. It was the highlight of my week. Do I enjoy sharing the music with the whole congregation during services? Absolutely. But before we ever get to that, we have so much fun at rehearsal - laughing, eating snacks, figuring out hard chord progressions and harmonies... it's delightful. When I think about it, I know I wouldn't enjoy Sunday morning without these times behind the scenes. The process of preparing is in itself an act of worship; a beautiful, behind-the-scenes, offering of time, talent, effort, and relationship.

I can't wait until Sunday. It's going to be a great service with Christmas music, a choir, and a kids performance. We are going to tell the story of how Jesus came to be Immanuel, God with us. We're going to bless our neighbours with Christmas in the Neighbourhood afterward and have fun connecting. But I will be especially grateful for the small beginnings and will intentionally be enjoying every "trust the process" moment of our final rehearsals and preparations this week.

Maybe you can relate with something you're walking through in your life. Whatever it is, be encouraged. God rejoices to see the work begin. Don't despise these small beginnings. Remember that Jesus came as a helpless baby and those small beginnings changed the world forever. He loves the process and will be present with you in it.

Christmas is Coming to the Neighbourhood (make a plan for December 15th!)

One of the highlights of last Christmas was the event we hosted in the Pavilion. We invited the neighbours and the church family and called it Christmas in the Neighbourhood. We're doing it again this year and are inviting you to make a plan to join us on December 15th from 12-2.

There are lots of reasons to be there... the live nativity is a big hit, the fires for marshmallows, the crafts, the pizza lunch (no cooking for you!), the kids and choir performances... but it is, of course, more than that. It's about intentionally connecting with our neighbours, meeting someone new and getting to know them over a cup of hot chocolate. It's about telling the Christmas story in multiple ways and being present as the body of Christ to show the hope, love, joy, and peace that Jesus brings. It's about having fun together and enjoying the gift of community while inviting others to join in (because there is always more room at the table).

So, go ahead and pre-order your lunch and get your heart ready to welcome our neighbours.

Also, join us on Sunday from 5:45-6:30 for a special time of prayer. We will pray in the sanctuary and then move to the Pavilion, believing together that God will use us this season to bring people to know Jesus!

Reframing (from anxious to excited)

Some of you may lose respect for me when I confess this, but I have to be honest. I do not like decorating for Christmas. Lots of folks love the whole process and find it whimsical and magical. (If so, please join us from 2-6pm tomorrow to decorate the church!) All I can think about it lugging the big totes up from under the stairs, making a big mess with the garland that will take forever to vacuum up, and how, when I'm finished, I still have to lug those totes back under the stairs... just to repeat the whole process in a few weeks. How negative is that?!

I know, I know, I can hear it. I can feel it. But Advent begins on Sunday and it is officially time to decorate for Christmas at the Dunham house. Will it be drudgery? Will I be cranky? Nope. Why? I will intentionally be reframing my thinking this week.

People often ask me how I can do so much public speaking without being nervous. The truth is, I can't. I'm always nervous. But I can reframe my thinking.

People often mention how they'd love to practice more hospitality and have people over but it's so stressful and their house is always a mess. Yeah, we all feel degrees of that; but we can reframe our thinking.

The most common thing you hear during the Christmas season is how busy everyone is, how crazy this season is, and how stressed people are. Perhaps... but we can reframe that, too. (And we don't have to do all the things either!)

By the time I get up to speak on a Sunday, I will have had a conversation with myself something like this: "Why are you doing this? What is interesting to you about this scripture? Why should other people hear about it? What's exciting to you about what God has for the church today?" And my nervous energy is transformed into excitement to share with you what I've been learning and what God's been showing me in the Word.

By the time I have guests over for dinner, I've had a conversation with myself like this: "If I ruin the food, we'll order pizza. They aren't here for my lasagna, they're here as friends, as family, as people worth spending time with. They aren't checking the dust on my bookshelf or the crumbs on my kitchen floor. They couldn't care less. It's going to be great to catch up with them." And my anxiety is reframed as gratitude for having a home and food and friends and family to share them with.

By the time I gather up my kids to decorate for Christmas this weekend, I will have this conversation with myself: "What a joy to transform this house to celebrate an amazing season. In a few hours there will be lights and garland and ornaments full of memories everywhere you look. The kids love this and will be so excited. It's time to step into that with them and enjoy the process." And my busyness slows down and turns to joy.

Of course, this is not a perfect formula. The mind, heart, and body don't always cooperate with my ideal outcomes. That's okay, too. But in all things, let me encourage you to reframe with the hope, love, joy and peace this season was built on.


8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Does it Feel Like Christmas Yet? (a Christmas hamper reminder)

As I'm writing this, it's 11 degrees outside; practically shorts weather for a lot of Canadians. I know that Christmas is only five weeks away but it doesn't feel like it, does it? I've been working away on our Christmas services and budgeting for gifts but I'll admit that the urgency just isn't there yet!

If you'll allow me, I'd like to ignore the warm weather and bring some Christmas spirit to your attention today. We have once again partnered with House of Friendship to provide hampers for four families in our community. We need to collect items for these hampers by December 1st (only 10 days away!) so that HOF has time to coordinate delivery before Christmas. This is such a simple and beautiful way to care for our neighbours this season.

Pastor Erin has created a great registration form on our website. You can just follow this link, get logged in and then choose an item (or items) that you would like to contribute to these families.

I'm looking forward to celebrating this beautiful season with you with carols and Advent themes, events and pageants, but mostly with how we bless our neighbours.

Help to Pray (more about the Holy Spirit)

As we shared for the past two weeks about "the Holy Spirit doing the most" from Romans 8, the Spirit praying through us (v.26-27) is one of the incredible ways that He helps us. While this doesn't only mean praying in tongues, it certainly can mean that. We see in scripture that the gift of tongues is a sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. There is so much good stuff to unpack when we talk about Spirit baptism. We don't have a chance to preach on it as often as we'd like to, but perhaps the Holy Spirit and Spirit baptism might be something new that you'd like to study more. I know that many of us don't come from a Pentecostal background and this might be unfamiliar territory. Here are some resources to get you started and as always, don't hesitate to reach out to me with more questions or insights. I'd love to hear your story and share in your journey.

The Alabaster Box (reflecting on Romans 7 and Luke 7)

In Luke 7, a story is told about a sinful woman who came and wet Jesus' feet with her tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. It's an incredibly moving scene. Jesus uses this moment to teach (and rebuke) those at the dinner with him.

We read this story on Sunday in our church-wide Bible reading plan and Dave added this comment to the end of the day's readings:

Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." (Luke 7:50)

There is the call to be encouraged but also the command to "go in peace." Jesus never said you are no longer going to sin and your sins are forgiven. He commanded us to go "in peace" because our sins have been forgiven.

I take away the thought that I must allow peace to have dominion over my heart when I sin... I will make mistakes and God will forgive... so have PEACE, not condemnation. By faith in Christ, I am commanded to have PEACE knowing I am loved and forgiven.

I live in faith and peace that I am forgiven... so live forgiven.

Another commenter chimed in with, "That reminds me of last week's message from Romans 7:14-15!" And, I would chime in with how beautifully that story exemplified Romans 8:1 from this past Sunday: "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death."

Friend, if you have been under the burden of sin and have asked for forgiveness, go in peace. Your faith through that repentance has saved you. You are loved and forgiven.

'Tis the Season (sorry, is it too soon?)

Please don't throw anything at me. I know that today is Halloween, and we are still almost two weeks away from Remembrance Day. I don't want to cause you anxiety or, for that matter, give you permission to put up your Christmas tree this weekend (I know some of you are already planning to!). In the spirit of hope, love, joy and peace, I want to draw your attention to the ways that we as a church family are planning to share Christ in the upcoming season and give you lots of time to engage and participate.

We know that Christmas is a time when hearts are especially open to hearing about Jesus. The longing that Advent (waiting for Jesus) points toward resonates with us in a broken world. The quiet of Christmas Eve calls our hearts back to the Prince of Peace. The joy of Christmas Day gives us a chance to celebrate and remember how blessed we are in every circumstance and season. We want to share these moments with you, and our neighbours, friends, families and community.

November will be a month of quiet preparation for the season and December will be a time to point all of us toward the miracle of Immanuel, God with Us.

When Your Heart is Happy (He's so, so good)

I don't typically write this devo on Sundays but my schedule this week has me sitting down at my laptop on Sunday evening to be sure I meet the deadline. Sometimes I know weeks in advance what I'm going to write about, and sometimes, like this week, I don't know until I log in. What do I want or need to say to our church family? What is important to talk about or highlight in church life?

I don't know what to write because all I can think about is our service this morning and how full and happy my heart is after the beautiful testimonies we heard from the five people who got baptized in water. I can't stop thinking about the worship that I heard and felt all around me as we sang together. I can't stop thinking about the hugs and the joy and the congratulations I saw after the service. I can't stop singing, "Hell lost another one, I am free, I am free, I am free." (Admittedly a bit of a silly lyric, but it's both true and so catchy!)

I don't think the unusual timing of when I am writing this is a coincidence. I can be guilty of rushing past a moment without remembering to go back and thank God for His goodness (like the nine lepers in Luke 17:11-19!). So, I'm inviting you into my pause for gratitude this week.

Think about what God has done. As Sunday's testimonies were shared, did you think about the difference Jesus has made in your life? To the people who have influenced you to walk faithfully with Him? To the time you were saved, baptized, healed, rescued, comforted, or filled with the Spirit?

Take a moment - or, actually, it might take you more than just a moment - to thank God for all He has done and continues to do in your life. Thank Him for the work He is doing in our church. Thank Him for the testimonies we heard on Sunday and pray blessing over Kyla, Sashen, Sandra, Ana, and Bruce.

Like the one leper who returned to Jesus after his healing, throw yourself at Jesus' feet and thank Him. He's so, so good.

We Are An Easter People (so end-of-life planning isn't so bad!)

In 1986, Pope John Paul II is quoted as saying, "We are an Easter people, and allelujah is our song!" I first heard this quote at a funeral and have never forgotten it. It's not that death doesn't cause Christians deep grief - of course it does. It's just that we know death has been swallowed up in victory and the resurrection of Jesus has the final word. And so, we are Easter people and alleluia is our song.

With that in mind, planning for the end of our lives should not be something we shy away from. As good managers of all that God has given us to take care of here on earth (see Matthew 25:14-30, for example), it makes sense that we have our questions answered and our affairs set in order.

This is the heart behind our next Sunday Night Conversation. On October 27 @ 6pm, we are going to have a very practical conversation about end-of-life planning. We'll cover everything from wills to what the Bible says about cremation. We'll dig into questions you have about how to prepare well and leave a legacy for your family.

Raised to Life (a preview of Sunday)

If you go to our website and read about being baptized in water, you'll find a lot of great information there. (See for yourself... freedomkw.com/baptism) I was re-reading it today and found myself with a "yes and amen" to all the reasons that baptism is important:

  • It is obedience to Christ's Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20;

  • It follows the example of Jesus;

  • It follows the example of the Early Church;

  • It confirms identification with Christ;

  • It is a testimony of the change in your life.

When you are baptized, you are being obedient to Jesus, following His example and making a public declaration of your faith in Him... but you are also making a powerful statement to yourself. Your identity has changed... or, more accurately, has been realigned with who you were created to be as a child of God. Your whole self (identity) that was focused on you is dead and buried and your life is made new because of your faith in Christ's death and resurrection. You were dead and God made you alive.

Baptism doesn't save you or make you a "real" Christian. No action can do that, only receiving Christ can. But it is still given to us as a powerful step to take as believers to mark the fact that we have truly been raised to life.

Our guest speaker, Dean Welten, is going to dive deeply into this from Romans 6:1-14 on Sunday. We were dead in our sin but have been made alive in Christ... What a way to celebrate Thanksgiving Sunday!

If you have a relationship with Jesus and have never been baptized in water, I challenge you to take this step. We have an opportunity for you to do that next week on Sunday, October 20th. If you are ready to be baptized but these dates don't work for you, just let us know and we'll happily fill up the tank and celebrate this moment with you on another day.

He Knows Our Name (and our missions giving goal, too!)

On Sunday, Pastor Erin and Mrs Theresa took a moment with our Freedom Kids to shine a spotlight on our Global Workers. They reminded us that we have the most important gift in Jesus and in order for others to know about Him, we have to go and share the good news about Him. We were also reminded (since it was Name Tag Sunday!) that no matter where we are in the world, God sees us and knows our name.

We also got an update about our missions giving for the year and how far we've come in reaching our goal of $31,000. To date, we've received $19,521, which is 63%. Thank you for your generosity and faith to invest in kingdom work all over the world!

One of my tasks when I came into the office on Monday was to put together the Financial Report for last month and post it in our website. It got me thinking.. do folks even know that this report exists? We do mention it occasionally, but it's not always headline news.

As you engage with the life of this local church, I encourage you to track with our finances. Our Treasurer does a great job putting reports together each month which are looked at in great detail by our Finance Committee and the Board of Deacons. I then take a few moments to comment on the report and post it to our website so you can look at it and stay up to date. (Note: by the time we close out a month, create, and approve the report, it's near the end of the next month already.)

Right as Rain (highlighting English Circles)

I wanted to take a moment to highlight a ministry that has been happening quietly at our church. Earlier this year, Pastor Erin and her team started English Circles, which is simply a place for people to come and practice their English conversation skills. It was a bit of an experiment but they knew it had the potential to really bless those who are new to Canada and trying to integrate into the culture and community.

Each time they gather the conversation has a theme (like "spring") and they talk about some of our strange idioms (think: "it's raining cats and dogs" or "right as rain" or "spring chicken"). Very useful when you're trying to understand a new language!

What's been interesting about this group is how transient they are. They might be in Canada for a short time, or unexpectedly have to travel or move. However, this is far from discouraging. One family moved to Canada, was introduced to faith in Jesus through English Circles, grew in their faith over the past year and then needed to move back to their country of origin to care for a family member. They are now in South America, sharing the gospel with their community there.

To be honest, that kind of story wasn't on the vision board for this ministry. We couldn't have anticipated the impact it might have. But we're humbled and grateful that we could be a part of their story of becoming followers of Jesus.

Our next round of English Circles starts on October 3rd and here's how you can help:

  1. Pray that God would bring people to EC. (We have hand-delivered 450 invitations to the neighbourhood beside us.)

  2. Pray for the team as they build relationships with all who attend.

  3. Tell a friend or neighbour about EC and invite them to join.

And, of course, if this is a ministry you're interested in getting involved with, you're welcome to get in contact with Pastor Erin.

Don't Walk Alone (join a Group this fall)

I love the Church. I love being a part of a community of believers. I love being able to serve others with what God has given me. And I love learning and growing by gathering with and listening to others who are also following Jesus. That's why I intentionally put Groups on my calendar each season. It's like a breath of fresh air in the middle of the week.

Admittedly, I don't always want to get in my car after dinner and get myself to the church for my group or log onto my computer and open Zoom. There are always things pressing for my time and energy. But, I can honestly say that I can't remember ever regretting the effort I made to get together with others and talk about the Lord. Literally, never.

And, not to be dramatic, but I don't know where I'd be as a disciple, how I would have made it through some dark days, or stayed encouraged all these years if it wasn't for the input of others in the body of Christ. Even the most average time in a Group far exceeds any input I might get from Netflix or scrolling on IG. It's not even a contest.

I don't say this to pressure people or make anyone feel guilty. I'm simply always going to be a champion of Groups in all their various shapes and sizes. True connection and learning that leads to engagement with the church and the world who needs to know Jesus is beautifully facilitated when we spend intentional time together.

If you have a place where this happens for you, go after it with all your heart. If not, join a Group at Freedom this fall. Most of our Groups happen on Wednesday night so we can provide a great program for kids (KizConnect) and childcare. But we also have a new Tuesday night Group on Zoom for men.

Where it All Begins (engage in Fast & Pray Days)

I don't think anyone would argue that prayer isn't important or even that it's optional for a person who follows Jesus. I also know that the honest assessment of most of our lives is that we don't pray as much as we could/should/need to/want to. It's a curious thing, really. We know it's vital but we find ourselves struggling to make it a priority.

This is one of the main reasons that we've put prayer on the calendar in September. There isn't any particularly special about the 16th-21st. They are just days that we've intentionally set aside to pray. They are on the calendar so that we can do the thing we know is vitally important and, we can do it together.

We know that we are called to pray and we believe that God moves as we do. You are invited to engage with us on September 16-21 for Fast & Pray Days. Here's how to do it:

  1. Sign up for a day to pray and fast for at least one hour. Find the sign-up form here: freedomkw.com/prayer (this will help us to know that all the days are covered with people praying)

  2. Check your inbox for our Prayer Guide. This will give you some things to pray for and about during the week.

  3. Join us on Saturday, September 21. Every hour from 10:00-4:00 we will have time for personal prayer for 45 minutes and a host to lead you in corporate prayer for 15 minutes. At 4:00 we will have an hour of worship (Deep Roots).

We had a similar day of prayer several months ago and it was powerful to see how God moved and what we sensed the Spirit was doing in us and in our church through it.

If you've never been a part of something like this before, don't let uncertainty or worry stop you. You won't be centred out in any way and this could be the beginning of a whole new season of your walk with the Lord!

I'm looking forward to this next week and hope to see many, many of you participating however you can, whenever you can. Let's believe for God to move in powerful ways!
