Did you know that this is the 5th day of Christmas? (10 points if you can tell me what your true love should give to you today… Yep, fi-----ve golden rings!)
After the 12th day of Christmas, the historic Church celebrated Epiphany on January 6th. The Christmas season is over, and a new season is beginning.
In the Eastern church, they celebrate Jesus’ baptism, recognizing His manifestation as the Son of God. In the Western church (that’s us!), Epiphany is a celebration of the coming of Christ for the Gentiles. The word comes from the Greek for “appearance” or “manifestation” and the story of the Magi’s visit in Matthew 2:1-12 is the centrepiece.
In English, when you have an epiphany, you suddenly understand the nature or meaning of something. That’s the incredible story of the wise men in Matthew 2. Even though they had everything that the world could offer them, they saw the star, followed it and suddenly understood that they were in the presence of true beauty and holiness.
We're going to talk about this and see ourselves in this story when we gather on Sunday for a New Year's Day service. We will also be starting our year in a beautiful way - observing Communion and praying for each and every person or family who is with us (on and OFF Campus!).
