Missions

Giving on Mission (welcome to the 2024 Missions Giving Plan!)

On Sunday, Pastor Erin will be taking a few moments to share our 2024 Missions Giving Plan with you. Living generous lives doesn't happen by accident. It happens when we are intentional with our resources, making everything available to God to use for His kingdom. It happens when we think of everything we have in this life as a gift to steward and we recognize who the true Owner is. This is true of all of our resources: our time, our talent and our finances.

Rob and I invite you to join our family as we make a financial plan for this coming year that demonstrates our commitment to stewarding our resources and stretches our faith in new ways. We continue to set aside our tithe first and ask God to show us how else we can support mission and ministry sacrificially. I'm not just giving lip service when I tell you that we love to do this because of the freedom and blessing we find in generosity. We want to grow in this area of discipleship and we encourage you to make this a part of what's next for you, too!

The button below will take you to our church's plan to give to missions this year. Go ahead and click it and learn more about how to join us in giving over and above this year.

Can't wait to get started,
Pastor Tracy

On Mission (working together here and around the world)

For the past several weeks, one of my least favourite ministry tasks has been going on behind the scenes at Freedom... we've been working on the 2024 budget. We have a team that does great work with this each year but of course, as Lead Pastor, I still need to spend quite a bit of time just looking at it, thinking about it, and trying to be sure we haven't missed anything or made any mistakes. It's an absolutely necessary process but I wouldn't call it the highlight of my year!

We will be working on the general operating budget until late in 2023 but it's not the only budget that we work on in the fall. This is also the time of year that the Missions Committee, Finance Committee and Board consider our missions giving for the coming year. What is God asking us to do in the new year? Do our missions partners still align with our core values? How can we commit to missions giving in a thoughtful and also faith-filled way?

2024 will be a special year for us in Missions. We will be launching our own Miss Margaret as a full-time Global Worker in Guatemala! We've known this for more than a year and the time has come for us to make some financial commitments to her that will reach into the next two years. It's been extremely exciting for us as we've worked on the 2024 and some of the 2025 missions budget... a lot more fun than budgeting for office supplies! And, not to leave you in suspense, but you will be hearing more about this in the coming weeks.

We believe in the mission God has given us as a church. We believe in making an impact here in Kitchener and in supporting those who are sent out from here to engage the world for Christ in other countries and contexts. Our missions giving budget is an expression of faith and obedience to what we believe God is calling us to do. It depends on each member of Freedom asking themselves, what is God asking me to do to support His mission through my local church?

As we get toward the end of this year, we are doing well in our General Fund and also well behind our target for missions giving year-to-date. (63%, $13,765 of our $22,000 goal.) This is an unusual circumstance for Freedom. At the end of the year, we will fulfill our commitments to our missions partners (for details, go to freedomkw.com/missions) and any shortfall in the Missions Fund will be covered by the General Fund.

The economy has been tough this year. So many people are worried, uncertain or struggling in their financial lives. That's reality to be sure. And still, as the people of God, we are called to trust Him in and with everything. As He cares for us, would you join Rob and me as we pray about what God would have us do to support the spreading of the Gospel in Kitchener, Canada, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Cambodia?

As you know my heart, you know this is not about guilt or obligation. This is simply an invitation to help us meet a need and believe in how God might stretch us for the global mission this year, into 2024 and beyond!

A few practical items:

  1. You can meet our missions partners and learn more about all of this on our website: freedomkw.com/missions.

  2. You can learn how to designate to our Missions Fund on our website: freedomkw.com/give

  3. You can hear from our Global Worker in Ethiopia, Jeremy Feller, this Sunday morning in service! Join us in person or online at 10am.

Finally, let me say thank you. Your generous giving to our General Fund has been unprecedented this year. Your response to meeting practical needs in our community (gift cards for seniors, food pantry donations, furniture and household items for a family new to Canada...) is inspiring and beautiful. God is using us, church. Let's keep pressing into lives of generosity!

On Mission (IMPACTING the world for Jesus)

One of our core values at Freedom is "IMPACTING, positively influencing the world for Jesus." We believe with all of our hearts that the gospel needs to be expressed in our words and actions and that it is our responsibility as those who have been transformed by Christ to tell others about Him.

Admittedly, this value always proves to be more challenging than the others. It seems easier to CONNECT with God and others and to TRAIN to think and act like Jesus. These values certainly require thoughtful action and a growth mindset but are also more about our choices than others. When it comes to expressing our faith in the world around us, it takes more intentionality. We have to pray for opportunities to share, boldness to speak, the heart of Christ in us to love as He loves and the courage to sacrifice for the gospel (time, resources, reputation).

Still, we press forward. It's okay if thinking about ourselves is more natural than not as we step out in this area. We are learning and growing, having our minds renewed daily, learning to stay in step with the Spirit and obey the commands of Christ. We will continue to pray and step out in faith. We will keep bringing the need to share the gospel to the forefront of our minds, learning to see where He is at work and following His lead. Right, church?!

IMPACT is an attitude of the heart as much as an action. From our posture to serve the world around us, we believe that God shows us the "what".

That's the heart behind supporting our missions partners. We choose to look beyond our walls, beyond our city and beyond our country and sow finances into ministries that are also striving to make an impact with the gospel.

We have our 2023 Missions Giving Plan up on our website and you've likely heard us talk about it on a Sunday morning. Head over there and find out where we believe God is calling us to make an impact outside of our church building.

Additionally, over the course of the year, we'll have a few opportunities to give to tangible needs in our community. Our hearts and ears are open for what these might be and we'll be ready to mobilize when the need is presented. (For a great testimony about this, check out a post in our CP Facebook Group from The Pregnancy Centre.)

We believe it's vital that our faith isn't kept to ourselves. This news is just too good. Without impacting being added to our connecting and training, we risk being ingrown, all about ourselves. Besides that, James says that our faith that isn't set to action is dead. (James 2:14-26)

Let's walk boldly into 2023 with the intention to make an impact for Christ!

With faith alive,
Pastor Tracy

Local Church | Global Reach (first missions update of 2021!)

We count it a privilege to have such excellent missions partners around the world that we get to support financially. God is moving and using our local church to make a difference in the global church. So grateful!

Our 2021 goal for giving to Missions is $22,000, which is over and above our General Fund budget. We are believing that we will meet and exceed both goals this year.

The Pentecostal Mission(ary) (a chat with the Aragons)

It was my great privilege to talk with Ruth & Hector Aragon, Global Workers in Guatemala that we support as a church. They are a JOY.

We were supposed to be hosting them in our 5th service this Sunday and even though we aren't able to do that, I didn't want to miss an opportunity to still be able to hear from them.

Specifically, as we get ready to celebrate Pentecost this weekend, I asked them to share how they see the Holy Spirit at work on their mission field and in their ministry. Take a listen to our conversation by clicking the image below.

We love this couple and I know you're going to be so encouraged by them!

Missions and Our Mission (the gospel keeps advancing)

Want to hear some good news? Our global workers are still seeing the gospel moving! Click the video link for 90 seconds of encouragement from Jeremy Feller, our mission partner in Ethiopia.

Whenever I hear from someone like Jeremy I think about my life and my mission right here in Kitchener. How can I see the gospel advance in my neighbourhood? How can my life be counted as making a difference for the kingdom?

Like Jeremy says, while we're not able to go too far from home, there are so many ways to continue to be the church that we are. As you invite someone to church online and interact with them, as you reach out to that person who has been on your mind to be a listening ear, as you financially support those who are in need, as you meet practical needs in the lives of people around you, you continue to make a statement about the grace and care and love of Christ.

We pray that this kind of effort makes a huge impact on the hearts of everyone this church reaches, that people would understand who Christ is and trust Him with their lives. We pray that every person who is discouraged or overwhelmed would learn through the encouragement of this church that He really has given us everything we need for a godly life.

How is your life on mission today?

Some of you know exactly how to answer the question, some aren't sure where to start. Here's a short list of ways to get moving in the right direction if you need some help!

  • Get on the Prayer Team (freedomkw.com/prayer)

  • Offer to help as needs arise (freedomkw.com/freedom-responds)

  • Reach out to someone you haven't heard from in a while

  • Invite someone to church and text with them during the service or have lunch with them over FaceTime afterward

  • Give - invest your finances in the work of the ministry

  • Join a CP group so you can connect with and encourage others as you learn

  • Make a meal and bring it to a family who needs a night off of making dinner

  • Really, whatever the Lord has put on your heart to do!

And that making a meal one is more than an idea, it's a plan we're working on. So many people in our lives don't need grocery pickups or financial assistance necessarily, they need a break from working from home while trying to homeschool their kids. It's a simple, beautiful way to extend hospitality in this season. Want to get involved in it? Just email Pastor Erin... and we'll talk about it more in the coming weeks.

Church, the gospel is advancing all over the world. Let's continue to commit ourselves to being a part of that advancement right here in KW.

People Investing in People (it's Ray of Hope!)

Allow me to introduce you to or reacquaint you with one of our missions partners. Ray of Hope works right here in Kitchener and provides life-changing services to people in need. They demonstrate the love of Christ to those who are disadvantaged, marginalized, or troubled. Their vision is: "People investing in people. Inspiring Hope. Transforming Life." Wow - it's no wonder that we count it a privilege to partner with Ray of Hope. Their vision and ours share so much in common.

Ray of Hope works in so many different areas of our community. Specifically, they focus on:

  • Community Support

  • Refugee Support

  • Youth Justice

  • Youth Employment

  • Youth Addiction

For the past several years we have been sending a team every other month to make and serve a meal at the Ray of Hope Community Centre. This year, even as we continue to do that, we have a plan to raise funds over and above the cost of the food to be able to bless their ministry in some way at the end of the year.

We appreciate everyone who has served with our Freedom team at Ray of Hope and invite you to get involved if you want to participate with us. (Just email Katie and let her know you're interested.)

Thank you for partnering with us as we support this great work in our community and our missions families!

IMPACT. (are you ready? it's happening!)

Around here we've been thinking about impacting this community... a lot! As we gear up for the Pavilion Project and get the word out to our neighbours in Williamsburg, I'm constantly reminded that as we CONNECT and TRAIN, we can't neglect taking Jesus' message of life transformation outside of these walls to create IMPACT.

Have you made a financial commitment to invest in the Freedom Pavilion Project? We need every person to join us in this goal so that the vision can become reality and this property would take another step toward being a Life Transformation Campus. (Scroll down to see the details of how to do that.)

But, of course, it goes beyond these 10 acres and into the world beyond us. And that's why it's such a joy for us to support our missions partners. We set our missions giving goal at $20,000 for 2020 after receiving over $28,000 in 2019. Wow! I shared this plan on Sunday during the service but if you missed it, click the link below to read about it.

And we're not done yet because your generous giving to our church means that we can keep dreaming and resourcing all that God is calling us to outside of these walls even as we grow and change and become more like Christ as we do life and ministry together.

I want to encourage you to consider for yourself and your family how you can invest this year. Our sacrifices for the kingdom are never in vain and open up blessing and opportunity for His purposes that we can only imagine.

IMPACT for the kingdom!

Praying for the Fellers (this month's missions focus)

If you were in the service on November 10th I know your heart was stirred by the report that Jeremy Feller brought to our church. (Jeremy and his wife Teresa are missionaries in Ethiopia.) What a beautiful opportunity to hear what God is doing in and around Ethiopia and to gather around him and pray as a church.

I simply wanted to take the opportunity to remind you of this family again and ask you to continue to pray for them on a regular basis. We won't share on this platform but if you were here on the 10th you know some of the more specific requests that Jeremy had so pray for intentionally for those.

We continue to be so grateful for all of our global workers who represent us and share Christ so powerfully all over the world. Thank you for your generosity in supporting each one of them through our 2019 Missions Giving Plan.

Grateful to you,
Pastor Tracy

Margaret Pfeiffer (aka Miss Margaret, our Children's Program Director) left us back in June to serve for six months in Honduras, a part of the world that has been close to her heart for many years. We were thrilled to be able to make her a part of our 2019 Missions Giving Plan (see button below for details) and to track with the impact she is having every day as she serves with our PAOC missionaries.

PRAISE REPORTS

Dear supporting church and individual friends, so much done on YOUR behalf as you allow us to be here… As we write this lines I, Hector, am teaching at the School of Evangelists of the Assemblies of God here in Guatemala for two weeks. Most of the 15 students in first grade and the10 students in third grade are already full-time out “On the Field” PTL! Good reports of salvations across the country.

At the end of January, 33 small roofs were installed (12X30) with ERDO for volcano eruption victims.

In February, a church roof was put on at the same time as a community roof by a work team from Ontario. And later, a medical/dental team from Edmonton worked in three communities where ChildCare Plus is present.

In March, pap tests and pampering happened for 200 pastors wives with a team from Manitoulin and four parsonage kitchens were redone.

For the past five years since we have been given the joy of administrating the ChildCare Plus program the ERDO we have grown from 180 children to now 530 strong, graduating a good number of technicians every year.

THANK YOU for your faithful support!!!

Hector & Ruth Aragon

Pour Out (how else can you get filled up?)

I got a great piece of advice from Encounters (our women's group) that had me thinking about how I approach my prayer time. Beth Moore encouraged us to "pour out" when we come to God so that we can be "filled up." The idea is to lay down everything that is filling us up with anxious thoughts, burdens, trouble (the list can go on) and then we are ready to hear and respond to the voice of the Spirit and be filled with His presence, His character, His wisdom, etc.

This is something that typically happens for me at some point when I am in a focused prayer time but not always the way that I would start. I had an opportunity to intentionally give it a shot during Fast & Pray Wednesday a couple of days later. We spend the thirty minutes praying on our own and so I sat down with the intention to "pour out". Do you know what I discovered? There was a lot to pour. When I took that pause in the middle of my day and tried to focus on prayer, I discovered that my mind and heart were full and distracted by a lot of things!

While this isn't really much of a shock since we all have a lot of things going on each day, it really reminded me how necessary silence and solitude is. If I had not been quiet, I would not have noticed the noise.

I'm grateful for the reminder and want to offer it to you as an encouragement to find the time to intentionally "pour out" and see what God might want to fill you with. He is so good that I can hardly begin to imagine what He can and will do with a heart that is poised to receive.

See you on Sunday,
Pastor Tracy

Sending (ciao, Miss Margaret!)

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
— Acts 13:2-3

With the same heart that the early church had for sending out people who had a calling to ministry outside of the local church, we are getting ready to send Margaret to Honduras next week. We are going to take time in our service on Sunday to commission her to her ministry calling and pray for her together. While I know it will be hard to say goodbye for seven months, I have so much joy in being a part of the church family who is releasing her to her new adventure. What a beautiful thing.

Here's what you can add to your prayer list for the rest of the year for Margaret:

  • God's continued guidance and direction in this new adventure.

  • Safety while traveling and serving.

  • The children and families that she is ministering to would come to know Jesus and have a personal relationship with Him.

You can follow Margaret's adventures on her Facebook group and we will share updates on our social accounts as well. (Links below.)

Also, everyone is invited to stay for lunch after the service if you'd like to spend a few moments sending her off and saying goodbye. We're going to keep it simple - $5/person for pizza, salad, dessert and beverages. Just be sure to RSVP for you and/or your family by tomorrow. (Yep, gluten-free options will be available.)

Praise the Lord for Pentecost - the gift of the Spirit empowering us. Now what? Do you ever wish that there was an "owner's manual" on how to use the Holy Spirit's power? Parters in Mission: The Fellers (say hi!)

Say Hello To... The Fellers

Bethany, Teresa, Zoe, Timothy, Jeremy

Bethany, Teresa, Zoe, Timothy, Jeremy

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to or reacquaint you with one of our missions families this week. The Fellers are a truly remarkable family with a missions calling in Ethiopia that resonates strongly with our own life transformation vision.

Jeremy and Teresa have three children - 5-year-olds Bethany and Timothy and almost 4-year-old, Zoe. They live in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, and use it as a launching point to minister all over eastern and northern Africa.

665570_10151314289815359_785547687_o.jpg

Recently, Jeremy was appointed the Africa Regional Director for PAOC Missions and so he's using Addis as a home base to give leadership the continent now! He's also uniquely qualified for ministry in Ethiopia because his love of coffee runs very, very deep (if his Facebook photos - 20+ - of cups of "buna" are any indication!).

Jeremy's heart beats to see the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ expand into the the parts of Africa that haven't been reached with the gospel and to raise the next generation of missionaries. Jeremy is a respected teacher and leader in the Ethiopian context. He has worked in training and releasing church planters, discipling young leaders, Bible college ministry, and on the leadership team of Addis Christian Life Assembly.

As we move through 2018 we'll be bringing you updates on what the Fellers are up to in Ethiopia and how our investment in their ministry is transforming lives in Ethiopia and on the continent of Africa.

Thank you for partnering with us as we support our missions families!

See you on Sunday,

Better Than Priests

You may have heard Jesus referred to as our Great High Priest. That sounds very important and powerful but what does it really mean? Our faith doesn't include a system of priests that practice spirituality on our behalf so what is the significance of Jesus being the best of all the priests? On Sunday we're going to be in Hebrews 4 and 5, discovering the incredible gift it is to have a Priest who is, in every way, better than those that came before Him.

See you then,
Erin

Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Ends of the Earth (our 2018 missions giving plan)

On Sunday I shared our missions giving plan for 2018. If I copy and paste it here you'll just see a lot of text and you'll be tempted to scroll past it. (You know it's true. LOL!) So, I've posted it here. Please take a couple of minutes to read it and get caught up on what's going on if you missed it. No, for real, please do!

We are excited to take this step of faith and see how God wants to use us to bless the world outside of our walls and see the life-transformation vision go beyond our walls. Here are some FAQs that you might have about how this will work:

How do I give to a specific missionary or organization?

You can simply specify that on your offering envelope or when you give online. Be sure to show the amount separately from your general giving. You can specify an amount and write: FellersAragonsManitoulin Mission (not "Pennings" because we send the money through Daystar Native Outreach) or Ray of Hope.

What if I just want to give to where it is most needed?

Great! Just designate an amount to missions on your offering envelope or when you give online. At the end of the year we will use these funds where they are needed most to fulfill our commitment.

What if we raise more than the amount we've committed to give this year?

Even better! If any missionary or organization receives more than the amount we've committed to them, they will receive the full amount of what has been designated to them. If we receive more in general (undesignated) missions giving than we've committed, the extra will be evenly distributed between our four missions partners.

Thanks for prayerfully considering how you can partner with us this year. I know you're going to love hearing from these great people (Aragons in April, Pennings in June, Fellers in November) and knowing that we are equipping others to take the life-changing message of Christ to the ends of the earth.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Let's do this together!

This Sunday...

The Bible Says Whut? "Because of the Angels"

1 Corinthians chapter 11 gives us a lot to chew on. Is Paul giving the church instructions for a hierarchy of spiritual authority? Should women wear head coverings? Should men always have short hair? And... "because of the angels"? At first glance this passage might make you say... wait, whut? But, of course, there are principles to heed and commands to follow that are for us right now in 2018. We're going to keep using all the tools at our disposal to help us understand how to let this tricky passage teach, rebuke, correct and train us in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16) See you on Sunday!
