RECONSTRUCTION | All The Rules (getting ready for Sunday)

In case you're joining us for the first time this year, let me recap. (If you're not, scroll down for this week's Sunday prep video!)...

We're starting the year with a series called Reconstruction. I want to address some of the main objections to the Christian faith and hope to accomplish a couple of things:

  1. Answer some of the most common questions about Christianity.

  2. Give believers who are struggling a solid foundation to build on.

  3. Equip the church with a basic understanding of apologetics (defending the faith) so that we will know how to talk about our faith in a non-defensive, relevant, informed way to the people in our lives.

As you can imagine, there is much, much more to say about each of the topics we'll be discussing then we have time for on Sunday mornings. I encourage you go deeper and study more on each topic. They are all fascinating!

We're using Tim Keller's book Reason for God and it's companion study guide to give us an outline for this series and it's a great place to start for a next step in your own learning and exploring.

Sunday's message, "Law or Grace" is based off of session three of the guide and chapter three of the book. I encourage you to watch the session (here's a link for you or click below) and pick up a copy of the book if you can.

As always, I'm looking forward to Sunday!

RECONSTRUCTION | One Way to God (getting ready for Sunday)

In case you missed it on Sunday, we're starting the year with a series called Reconstruction. I want to address some of the main objections to the Christian faith and hope to accomplish a couple of things:

Sunday's message, "Narrow or Wide" is based off of session two of the guide and chapter one of the book. I encourage you to watch the session (here's a link for you or click below) and pick up a copy of the book if you can.

RECONSTRUCTION | The Bible (getting ready for Sunday)

Everywhere I turn I hear the term “deconstruction.” Do you know about this? It refers to someone taking apart their faith and the things they have believed for a long time – particularly those who grew up in church, particularly those in Evangelical circles. They are deconstructing their faith and finding another way to live or something else to believe.

On one hand, I encourage the process, especially for anyone who grows up in the church. If your faith is a matter of your family tradition or culture, it’s vital that you get down to the heart of it and find out what you really believe for yourself.

On the other hand, I have yet to hear a story of deconstruction that isn’t informed by a wound that the person has experienced in the church. They have been hurt or been taught something that doesn’t work or isn’t loving or merciful or they have seen a leader fall morally, ethically or spiritually, or they have seen hypocrisy in their home growing up. All of these are real hurts and need to be reckoned with, to be certain… but I haven’t heard of someone looking for Jesus and finding him wanting. The story is that they couldn’t find Jesus in the middle of the rest of it.

So we're starting the year with a series called Reconstruction. I’m not trying to be cheeky (though, you know, don’t put it past me), I wanted to address some of the main objections to the Christian faith and hope to accomplish a couple of things:

It doesn’t matter what category you put yourself in, I want you to know something… I don’t know all the answers but I invite the questions and have seen faith in Jesus stand up to every question I’ve asked so far. I encourage you to take that same posture: hearts open, ears listening, minds active.

I've been using Tim Keller's book Reason for God and it's companion study guide to give us an outline for this series. Sunday's message, "Truth or Fiction" is based off of session one of the guide and chapter seven of the book. I encourage you to watch the session (here's a link for you) and pick up a copy of the book if you can.

I'm looking forward to starting this new season with you... see you on Sunday!

Happy New Year!
Pastor Tracy

Advent | Christ (prayers and readings for the weeks of Christmas)

And here we are, ready to celebrate Christmas, the Advent of Christ. The waiting is over and He has come. He is Immanuel, God with us.

Our plans for this week will all look a little different. We all celebrate with our own traditions and preferences. We might be making changes again this year as the pandemic continues to present challenges. But whatever you're doing, be intentional about gathering around the nativity story and the miracle of the coming of Christ because friends, it changed everything.

Here are a couple of ideas for you...

I'm so glad that we get to gather twice this week - Christmas Eve at 6pm and Sunday morning at 10am. What a beautiful season we're in.

Merry Christmas!
Pastor Tracy

PS - Take a look at our Christmas Eve page for all the information about our service, how to participate and how to invite someone to join you!

Advent | Joy (prayers and readings for the weeks of Advent)

And now, for the fourth Sunday of Advent. We have one more opportunity as we gather this weekend to bring our attention back to the longing and expectancy of the Jewish people as they waited for the Messiah (which reminds us how desperately we also need a Saviour). We have one more chance to let that point us to the coming of that very Messiah and the fulfillment of the promise that He really would come (which reminds us to be looking and waiting expectantly for His second coming). This is an incredible season and it's an honour to be able to observe this season with you all!

To help us celebrate, I've again provided a prayer and some readings (Old Testament, New Testament, Gospel and Psalm) that I have gone back to many times over the years and find helpful.

Advent Readings & Prayers: Week 4

As we did in our service last Sunday, we will pause to pray the prayer together, so I encourage you to read it over before Sunday.

This Sunday's Advent theme is joy and I'll be teaching from the end of Matthew 24 with the reminder that when we find ourselves waiting, He is faithful.

With joy,
Pastor Tracy

Advent | Peace (prayers and readings for the weeks of Advent)

We are getting ready for the third Sunday of Advent and again, the chance to bring our attention back to the longing and expectancy of the Jewish people as they waited for the Messiah, which reminds us how desperately we also need a Saviour. It continues to point us to the coming of that very Messiah and the fulfillment of the promise that He really would come, which reminds us to be looking and waiting expectantly for His second coming. This is an incredible season.

Advent | Love (prayers and readings for the weeks of Advent)

Sunday marks the second Sunday of Advent and again, the chance to bring our attention back to the longing and expectancy of the Jewish people as they waited for the Messiah, which reminds us how desperately we also need a Saviour. It continues to point us to the coming of that very Messiah and the fulfillment of the promise that He really would come, which reminds us to be looking and waiting expectantly for His second coming. I trust you're enjoying the beauty of this season.

To help us celebrate, I've again provided a prayer and some readings (Old Testament, New Testament, Gospel and Psalm) that I have gone back to many times over the years and find helpful.

Advent Readings & Prayers: Week 2

As we did in our service last Sunday, we will pause to pray the prayer together, so I encourage you to read it over before Sunday.

This Sunday's Advent theme is love. How appropriate as we think about the motivation for the coming of Christ - at Christmas and again at His second coming. Let that rest in your heart this week!

Advent | Hope (prayers and readings for the weeks of Advent)

The season of Advent is a double feature. It brings our attention back to the longing and expectancy of the Jewish people as they waited for the Messiah, which reminds us how desperately we also need a Saviour. It also points to the coming of that very Messiah and the fulfillment of the promise that He really would come, which reminds us to be looking and waiting expectantly for His second coming. It's truly a beautiful season.

Sunday marks the first day of Advent this year and around the church we are getting ready. We intentionally make changes to our decor and sermon series to mark the day. We use these external markers to remind us that we're in a new season. We also mark this date because we are all well aware of how (I hate to say it...) busy December is and how quickly our attention gets drawn away from the miracle of the birth of Christ and the hope, love, joy and peace that we are invited to participate in because of Him.

To help you truly celebrate the coming of Christ and to look to His second coming, I'm going to provide a prayer and some readings (Old Testament, New Testament, Gospel and Psalm) that I have gone back to many times over the years and find helpful.

Advent Readings & Prayers: Week 1

We will pause in each service during Advent to pray the prayer together, so I encourage you to read it over before Sunday.

We also have a YouVersion reading plan for Advent starting on Sunday. It would be great to read scripture with you over the next few weeks so click the link below for the invitation to the plan.

This Sunday's Advent theme is hope. How very fitting for this Season of Hope we are in as a church. I'm really looking forward to sharing these next few weeks with all of you.

With hope,
Pastor Tracy

Your Turn: Winning With Worship (november mini-series | part three)

This week Rob is taking us through a couple of incredible biblical narratives: Paul & Silas in Acts 16 and Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20. In both cases, choosing to worship in the middle of an impossible situation was key to their victory.

So, just like the last two weeks, I am going to be asking you to respond to the question I'm posing in this email. My goal is to add our voices together to help one another with the practical applications of the lessons. Are you ready for one more? Let's do it!

This week...

What is a song of worship that has helped, strengthened or encouraged you?

You don't have to share the circumstances or details unless you want to - you can just tell us the name of the song. Share as much or as little as you'd like. On Sunday, I hope to have a chance to sing a few of these songs and share your stories along with them!

Thank you for being a part of connecting with God and each other. I'm looking forward to hearing from you this week again.

Together in Christ,

Your Turn: Witness That Wins (november mini-series | part two)

This week we're looking at 1 Timothy 4 and how Paul tells Timothy to "watch your life and doctrine closely." The interesting thing about this book of the Bible, as well as 2 Timothy and Titus, is that the advice is being given to a young pastor but the whole congregation gets to listen in.

There’s something extra and very exciting for this service… we're going to have a special guest help us to apply this teaching in a cross-cultural way and to our everyday lives as well. I will be interviewing Jeremy Feller, our mission partner in Ethiopia, at the end of the message and will have a chance to ask him your questions (as well as mine!).

Just like last week, I am going to be asking you to respond to the questions I'm posing in this email. My goal is to add our voices together to help one another with the practical applications of the lessons. Are you ready? Let's do it!

Share the best piece of wisdom you've been given in your life.

AND/OR

What is a question you'd like to ask Jeremy Feller, our mission partner in Ethiopia?

Your Turn: Scriptures That Speak (november mini-series | part one)

This month, I'm inviting you to be a part of the Sunday message. No, not someone else - you!

We're beginning our November series with a look at Luke 4 and how Jesus "won" by knowing the scriptures. So, does that still work? Does it work for us?

All month long I am going to be asking you to respond to this devo. My goal is to add our voices together to help one another with the practical applications of the lessons. Are you in? Let's do it

This week...

Share a scripture that has helped you with a difficult decision, strengthened you to overcome a struggle or has spoken deeply to your life.

You don't have to share the circumstances or details unless you want to. You can just respond with the chapter and verse(s). Share as much or as little as you'd like. On Sunday, we will be reading these scriptures out loud and not sharing the stories (unless I specifically ask your permission).

Thank you for being a part of connecting with God and each other. I'm looking forward to hearing from you this week and in the weeks to come.

Responsiveness is a Super Power (october mini-series | part four)

With today's topic I want to prove that I practice what I preach. I recorded this video and wrote this text in the time I blocked on my calendar for this task (see photo!)... and I made this plan at the end of last week. We'll talk more next week about how to make sure that tasks don't become more important than people and our relationships, but this is a great place to start.

Planning ahead is all about making sure that the things that are truly important are given the time they need. A lot of things work against this and so we always need to be intentional about pursing what is best at the best times that we can. Sure, a lot of our time is spoken for and isn't ours to control, but for all the time that is ours to manage and use how we want, this concept can be very, very beneficial.

So, Plan Ahead. Check out the video below.

Respect Your Time (october mini-series | part two)

This next concept in our October devotional series is so simple that it hurts a little. When I realized that if a task takes an hour to complete that I need an hour to complete it, it hit me like a ton of bricks and also set me free.

It's a bit ridiculous how I used to treat my time - like it was infinite and that I could get ten things done every hour of the day. Not only is that impossible time-wise, it's impossible energy-wise.

Knowing that your time is limited and scheduling tasks according to the real time that they take and their importance in your life is beautiful and freeing.

In the video I tell a story from the life of Daniel about setting aside the "tyranny of the urgent" and figuring out the time you truly need. You can read it in Daniel 2 and pay attention to verse 16 specifically. Thankfully the consequences of our tasks aren't likely to be as serious as Daniel was facing, but the idea that we can ask for time, take time, make the important things a priority and accomplish in our finite time the things that truly need to be done - not trying to be superheroes nor avoiding what needs to be done - is helpful, practical and teaches us to stay Christ-focused every day.

So, Respect Your Time. Check out the video below.

Get it out of your head! (october mini-series | part one)

I am going to do a little series in October on one of my personal passions: time management. And by that, I really mean getting your mind clear and being able to focus on what's important and make progress toward things that truly matter.

I study this subject a lot because when I let my days and weeks just kind of come at me, I far too often find myself with a million things swirling in my head and living at a pace beyond my capacity. That's definitely not how I was created or what I'm called to in Christ.

We'll start with something basic that helps to set up the rest: Get it out of your head. Check out the video below.

More From Sunday... (before we go to our next series)

I really enjoyed the last few minutes of the service on Sunday when I was getting responses from the congregation. The question was: how do you stay connected to the Head and the Body (that is, of course, Jesus and His church)? You can watch it here if you missed it.

We can never underestimate the power of making the scriptures a part of our daily lives as one of the vital way that we live out an answer to the above question. With that in mind, let me personally invite you to the scripture memory challenge that Pastor Erin has posted in the Connecting Point Facebook Group.

In September, the challenge was to memorize Ephesians 2:8-9:

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."

In October, the challenge will be to memorize Romans 15:13:

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Will you join us and take another step toward connection by memorizing the Word with others in community?

Feel free to join us in our CP Facebook Group at any time. We'd love to have you there to share prayer requests, encouragements and challenges like this one!

Together in Christ,
Pastor Tracy

In the last week of this 4-part series, we're focusing on how we stay connected to the body. We know the foundation - the body of Christ, we understand the metaphor, we see how each part of the body is gifted by the Spirit and now, we focus in on how each of us needs to remain vitally connected to the Head, Christ Himself.

Boots on the Ground (September Studies: Week 1)

Our Impact Leadership Training group last spring was studying the course Learning to Serve. During one of our Zoom MeetUps someone said that serving is like being the "boots on the ground" for Jesus. It stuck with me.

We're kicking off the fall with a series named just that: Boots on the Ground. All of our messages will revolve around one primary theme - what does it mean to be the body of Christ, his boots on the ground, so to speak?

First up, I've invited Pastor Del to set the stage with the FOUNDATION of it all - the literal body of Christ, broken for us on the cross, remembered and proclaimed during communion (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Then, we'll be looking at the FORM, FUNCTION and FUSION of Church as He lives in and works through us as His body.

Through the month of September I'm going to set you up with a study each week that will help you both prepare for Sundays and deepen your understanding of biblical teaching about the Body, the gifts of the Spirit, and how it all works in our lives and as a church family.

To begin, linked below is a chapter from First Steps that teaches about the foundation of communion (and water baptism). For the full course, head over to our NEXT page to download or request a hard copy.

I'm really looking forward to digging into these passages with you this month!
