A Season of... Joy (the third Sunday of Advent)

This Sunday's Advent theme is joy. The Bible Project's video about the word "joy" in scripture is so insightful. It shares why Christians can be known to be full of joy even in hardship or persecution, why the Apostle Paul can say that he's chosen joy, even if he's executed.

This joy isn't a happy feeling. It's powerful and it's a gift of the Spirit. It's available to us and growing in our lives when we cooperate with His work. (See Galatians 5:22-23!) And, it's where we'll focus for Advent this week.

Ultimately, Jesus is the source of and reason for our joy. So, it's no wonder that when the angels were announcing His birth to the shepherds they called it "good news that will cause great joy for all the people." (Luke 2:10)

Take a look at the linked video and prepare your heart for the joy of the season!

With joy,
Pastor Tracy

A Season of... Love (the second Sunday of Advent)

This Sunday's Advent theme is love. It's always appropriate to set our focus on the love of God and how we are called to express it in our lives. Just think of the Greatest Commandment. In Matthew 22:37-39, when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment is, he said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’"

We know that love is important and this Sunday, beautifully, we are gathering around the Communion table to remember Jesus' ultimate act of love for us... the reason that we can love others and fulfill Jesus' command. When we recognize the great love of God for us displayed on the cross, we can live in that kind of love in our families, our schools, our places of work and our neighbourhoods.

Take a moment to reflect on this week's Advent theme: love. The video below is helpful - take a few minutes to watch if you can.

I'm looking forward to journeying through the second Sunday of Advent with you!

See you then,
Pastor Tracy

A Season of... Hope (welcome to Advent)

Sunday marks the first day of the season of Advent. At the risk of repeating myself (because I say and/or write something about this every year), I want to invite you into this very special season by highlighting why we celebrate it.

Advent isn't simply the beginning of Christmas. In the Christian liturgical calendar, Christmas is Christmas! Well, actually, Christmas is 12 days, from December 25th until January 5th, leading to Epiphany on January 6th... but we'll talk about that during our New Year's Day service!

Advent is the season of anticipating the coming of Christ, preparing our hearts, making room, remembering the longing of the Jews as they waited for the Messiah and ultimately, identifying with that longing as we wait for Christ's return. How beautiful.

On Sunday our physical space will look different (here come the trees and lights!) and our services will include features about the themes of Advent: hope, love, joy, and peace. We will light a candle to remind us of these themes and on Christmas morning we will light the final candle representing Christ.

Take a look at the Bible Project's teaching on the biblical words for "hope", the first theme in the Advent season. Consider the hope you have in Christ and our great hope in His second coming.

Welcome to Advent.

See you on Sunday,
Pastor Tracy

Christmas Time is... Near! (SHAPED for Serving this season)

Our Shaped for Serving workshop reminded me of just how uniquely created and gifted each one of us is. Things that I love to do or come easily to me could be the same things that another person has no interest in or finds difficult... and vice versa! It's a really beautiful thing when we learn to appreciate it... and Scott certainly helped us to do that during the workshop.

This idea fits really well with all that we're planning for Christmas at Freedom this year. No need to try to "do it all" or get overwhelmed... we have a few seasonal events and opportunities that we hope will inspire lots of different people to get involved.

Williamsburg Family Christmas Event

  • Sunday, December 18 @ 12:00-2:00

  • Volunteer: Contact Pastor Erin

  • Attend: Mark your calendar and watch for details!

Decorate the Church for Christmas

House of Friendship Christmas Hampers

  • Find needed items on our website: freedomkw.com/offer-help

  • Drop off purchased items at the church by November 30th.

  • Watch for an opportunity to bless The Pregnancy Centre coming up in December!

Share Your Christmas Traditions

  • What is a special tradition in your family? Let Pastor Tracy know and we'll use your stories throughout our Advent and Christmas services!

God has so beautifully gifted His church. I'm looking forward to serving alongside you as we all put what He's given us to use for His kingdom... inside and outside the church!

Let us know if you have any questions and/or click the links to get involved.

Happy Christmas!

Let's Start at the Beginning (it's a very good place to start!)

Sometimes, one thing informs another. Have you ever found this? You start doing one thing and it leads to something else that leads you back to the first thing but more deeply. That might seem a bit ambiguous but that's what I feel has happened in church life over the past few weeks. Let me explain.

We launched Sunday Night Conversations (SNC) with a discussion on the sanctity of life, primarily focusing on the issues surrounding abortion. While our conversation was appropriately heavy, it was also beautiful, encouraging, challenging and helpful. As part of my research for the night, I had a chance to Zoom with the Executive Director of The Pregnancy Centre in Kitchener (thanks for taking the time, Jenn!). It was enlightening and I left that conversation more informed and also inspired by the good work that they are doing at TPC.

From that, Pastor Erin and I were talking about how we can help the community this Christmas season. The heart of our church is to find the places where needs can be met and the love of Christ can be shown in practical ways. So, we are doing Christmas hampers for five families whom House of Friendship has identified as being in need but don't qualify for other programs. And then, in the month of December, we're going to collect stroller covers for TPC (and make a Christmas tree out of them in the lobby!) because we asked what they really needed and that's what they said. We can do that.

I was shown in new ways how meeting the needs around us can show people who are hopeless or simply feel like they have no options that they are loved and not alone, that they do have options and there is someone to help them. Simple and profound. What a sobering (and inspiring!) reminder.

So our SNC informed our Christmas collections in November and December and those things started to stir another conversation and settled my heart on what our next SNC should be.

Why do we do these things and think this way? It's because we believe what the Bible says and trust it to guide our lives. That is the basis of every SNC. That's our worldview, the lens that we look at everything through. So... how do we know that we can trust the Bible? It is actually trustworthy after all of these years and all the translations and all that we know now in modern society?

So, our next Sunday Night Conversation, coming up on November 20th, will be about precisely that. We'll lay the foundation of why we believe in the authority of scripture and also leave lots of space for you to ask any "yeah, buts" that you might have. I know that you face this in your families and workplaces and I'd like for us to talk about it. Join me if you can.

From this to that and back again. I love when that happens. So let's start at the beginning on November 20th... it's a very good place to start. :)

Looking forward to it,
Pastor Tracy

Identify and Catalyze (join SHAPED for service!)

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

God has uniquely shaped each of us to serve in His Kingdom. We have a mix of strengths, personality traits, passions, motivations and callings and we need to pay attention to those as clues to where God might be directing us to serve.

Join us on November 6 as Scott Corkill leads us through a series of questions that will help to identify and catalyze our calling and place of ministry. It will be encouraging, practical and hands-on. Join us in person or on Zoom. (Childcare available.)

We wanted to make this opportunity available to you as a follow-up to our Green Lights series. This workshop will be well worth the investment of your time and will give you the skills to help you now but also into the future because... who knows what God might have for you next!

Follow The Peace (God's will for your life!)

Have you ever wondered what the will of God is for your life? Ever stressed about messing it up or choosing the wrong path? Trust me, you're not alone.

I actually like the question because there's an underlying assumption that God has a plan for your life and that doing it His way will be the best way. Scripture definitely backs that up. (See Ephesians 2:10, Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 1:5, Psalm 32:8, Proverbs 3:5-6)

Where we need to be cautious is when we are stressing about the future or worried about getting it right. Jesus told us in no uncertain terms not to do that, like, at all. (Matthew 6:25-34)

On Sunday we're going to talk about how to know what the will of God is for your life and, spoiler alert, it's more simple than you might realize. It's much more about the posture of your heart than the writing on the wall. (Take a sneak peek for yourself: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

But when it comes to the specifics of making decisions in your life, there is a way that I counsel people to know if they are following the path that the Lord has for them. I tell them to follow the peace. When we truly lay down our preferences and pride, our need to control and our fear (and whatever else we're carrying when it comes to our future) and ask Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to show us what's next, I have always found that I can make decisions with a great degree of confidence because my mind and heart are at peace. When you consider your options, which one brings peace?

I will tell you from experience that feeling the peace of Christ doesn't mean that I am choosing the easiest path or necessarily the one that I thought I wanted. That's not guaranteed. But walking in His peace is worth it every time. Every. Single. Time.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." (Isaiah 26:3)

And so, if I may give you the best piece of counsel I have to know the will of God: follow the peace.

Let's talk more on Sunday!

See you then,
Pastor Tracy

A Fresh Look at "Outreach" (partnership, neighbours, helping)

Pastor Erin shared her vision for outreach, or Community Connections, on Sunday morning. I hope you were able to be there but in case you weren't or just simply for a refresher, here is her message to the church family for you to reflect on.

- Pastor Tracy

---------------------------------------------

Community Connections is about stepping outside of the four walls of the church and doing life with those around us. It’s about meeting the spiritual and physical needs of our community while expressing God’s love in ways that build relationships and provide opportunities to share the gospel message.

We have all received gifts and talents from God, and as such it is our privilege and responsibility to use these to minister to others.

At Freedom do this in 3 ways:

1. Partnership

By partnering with neighbouring community associations, we expand our reach by making our facilities and property available for their low-cost programs to bless the community. Through these partnerships, we can maximize our efforts by coming alongside programs that are already running instead of creating new ones.

These partnerships welcome the community into our space and help them see that this is a place they are always welcome.

Whenever possible we endeavour to be present during programs with Community Hosts. These Hosts may serve coffee or give away treats but most importantly they interact with people and build relationships.

2. Community Building

We desire to be intentionally active in the neighbourhood around us, not only as a green space but as a place that fosters community and relationship building. We do this through activities, events and programs that are focused on building relationships between us and the community and within the community itself. Examples of this may be hosting sports days, block parties or kids' drop-in programs.

3. Helping

In the same way that we will intentionally foster relationships, we want to be intentional about being the hands and feet of Jesus in our community. We recognize that we have been blessed and as such we are called to care for the needs of those around us, responding to the obvious needs and hidden poverty found in our community.

We do this by having an up-to-date and reasonable plan on how to address help requests (groceries, clothes, etc.) that we are made aware of. We recognize we cannot meet every need, but we can and will show compassion, love, and kindness in every situation.

We continue to partner with other organizations like Ray of Hope and House of Friendship who are already doing this work well. We will do more together than we could do alone.

Pavilion & Freedom Community Centre

Your investment in the Freedom Pavilion project is an investment in kingdom building. With this new facility, we will continue to host, connect with, and bless the community.

The Freedom Community Centre (FCC) has long been the heart of our community outreach. The Pavilion is an extension of the FCC, allowing us to dream bigger about how the property can be a spiritual oasis for our neighbours. Allowing the Pavilion to take on the role of hosting programs and inviting the community in frees up the FCC space for other opportunities.

In partnership with Matt and Tamara Smith, we have transformed the upstairs of the FCC into a retreat space. Upstairs you will now find a two-bedroom apartment where the Smiths can welcome missionaries in need of debriefing and healing from their work. When not in use for their ministry we will open this space to other churches, ministers and our Freedom Family in need of a quiet respite and a place to seek God.

Next Steps

The beauty of this focus is that every God-given gift and skill can find a place to serve.

Here are a few ways you can get involved (there are so many more):

  • Love cooking and meeting physical needs? We welcome you to help fill our freezer with meals to bless those on retreat or people and families that need to know they are cared for.

  • Don’t have the capacity to commit to a weekly program? You can help run a Block Party to connect with the community.

  • Love people and want to connect? Become a Community Host and get to know the people coming to the Church each week.

There is a way for everyone to IMPACT our community for Christ. We invite you to dream with us and put those dreams into action.

Sunday Night Conversations (come for coffee, information and discussion)

I've heard from many people over the past several months that they just don't know how to respond to some of the tough questions that are being posed by their kids, their coworkers, the media... basically, our culture. Some have told me that they know what we believe but don't know why. Some have told me that they don't know where the church stands on certain issues. Some are asking how to teach their kids a biblical response to hot topics. Fair enough. Things are changing at breakneck speed and it's harder and harder to keep up.

With that in mind, I wanted to create a space where we could have these kinds of conversations. And I do mean conversations. While I'm not opposed to speaking about big issues on a Sunday morning, I believe that these topics need to be discussed, questions should be freely asked and time should be spent chewing on them.

This is why I'm not leading a CP group this season. I've been working on putting together Sunday Night Conversations, a series of sessions that will present the biblical viewpoint on big issues, offer a Christian response and give time and space for the "yeah, but what about(s)..." that you might have heard from others or have yourself.

I'm inviting you to join me for our first Sunday Night Conversation on Sunday, October 23 @ 6pm. We will be talking about the sanctity of life - abortion and medical assistance in dying. I'll share and then open up the conversation.

These conversations are open to anyone of any age but parents should use discretion as our content will be mature, controversial and likely rated PG-13.

Join me for a cup of coffee and a conversation a week from Sunday. I'd love to hear from you.

Blessings,
Pastor Tracy

New Season, Next Step (ready for what's next?)

I walked my dog this morning and checked the weather before I left the house. It was -1. If I didn't feel it before, I'm certainly feeling the fact that we're in a new season! You're probably feeling it, too.

New seasons often come with the desire to reprioritize, learn something new, or create a change in your life in some way. So I wanted to take the opportunity to invite you into any next steps in church life that you might have been thinking about.

Everything we do here at Freedom needs to CONNECT people to God and others, TRAIN us to be more like Jesus or IMPACT the world for Christ... preferably more than one at the same time! These are our core values and we're looking to have each one active and growing in our lives so that we can experience daily life transformation.

We've talked a lot about Connecting Point groups (which connect and train us and may even give us opportunities to impact the world!). We absolutely believe these groups are invaluable. They start next week so don't miss out on the chance to grow with others. LEARN MORE

There are also steps in church life that are available to you throughout the year. Allow me to draw your attention to some of them and encourage you to take these steps if they are what's next for you...

Water Baptism: coming up on Sunday, October 30

Church Membership: apply any time on our website

Child Dedication: can be coordinated on a Sunday that works for your family

Pause for Thanks (so very, very grateful)

This is being written after a beautiful weekend of celebrating God's goodness at our Freedom Pavilion Grand Opening. I spent quite a bit of time putting together "thank-yous" for the dedication service and the ribbon cutting and want to share some of them with you. When we talk about the vision, mission and core values of the church, it's the church herself who embodies them. This project has been an incredible example of just that.

_____________________________________

"Thank you to the original Pavilion Committee led by Julie Schroth: Brian Domm, Sandra Park, Pastor Erin Jamieson and Callie Schmitz. You poured so much of your time and talent into dreaming about how we would use this building and then how to make it a reality. This was no small feat and we honour your work.

"Thank you to Brian Domm, specifically, who acted as the construction manager and oversaw every detail of construction. Your expertise was vital but we are especially grateful for the excitement and joy you brought to all of the very hard work that you did from day 1 back in December to landscaping last week.

"Thank you to the Board and Finance Committee who worked alongside the Committee every step of the way, giving oversight and taking on the risks that a project of this size brings with it. Your faith and thoughtful stewardship is something I wish more people could witness in real-time the way I get to.

"Thank you to Pastor Erin who took leadership of this project in March, jumped into a steep learning curve and saw it all the way through to storage shelves and pipe insulation. Your dedication to seeing this day happen kept us all believing we’d cross the finish line and here we are. We appreciate you so much.

"Thank you to every one of you who showed up, sometimes with only a few hours notice, to spread out straw or dig it back out again, to rake and rake and rake, to move in and move out and even today, to decorate and serve. All of it mattered and has made today possible.

"And thank you to each one who has sacrificed financially to build this pavilion. I remind you of the promise of God in 2 Corinthians 9 that when you have sowed generously, you will reap generously. We fully believe that and also that Jesus will be known in all that we do here at Freedom – you have helped us to expand our reach and ability to serve for the kingdom."

Pastor Tracy

Life Transformation Campus (ready for a Pavilion party?!)

On March 6, 2017, Julie Schroth sent me an email with a drawing attached. It said: “At the last board meeting, you asked if anyone had access to a program for designing the pavilion. My brother has one he used for doing his house and shop blueprints… this is what he sketched up for me… I like to dream about this stuff.”

It took us 5.5 years, countless emails, meetings, and phone calls, stacks of paperwork and a million decisions. And now, the Freedom Pavilion is open and already being used as part of our Life Transformation Campus. Thank you, Jesus!

That really is our dream. We want all 10 acres of our property to work as a campus that enables and equips people to have their lives transformed by Christ. The Pavilion is the next step. It was ambitious, it was delayed by a global pandemic, and now it's complete, ready to be used to serve our neighbours and church family alike. What a blessing.

To thank you for being a part of it we want you to know that you are invited to the Grand Opening on Sunday. We're going to take some time to reflect and dedicate the new space in our service and then go out to the Pavilion for a ribbon-cutting and lunch. We'll have activities for the kids, give tours, answer questions and in general, have a party!

Please join us as we celebrate the goodness of God at work in our church and the next step of our Life Transformation Campus being complete.

Connect, Train & Impact (CP groups are back!)

I get it. Not everyone likes school. Lots of people are very glad that those days are behind them. But still, there is something so great about September. The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and the stores are filled with fresh school supplies ready for new backpacks and pencil cases. Sigh. I get a little jealous.

I'm a little too practical to buy myself things that I don't need just because they are pretty (most of the time!). But I still like to capitalize on the burst of energy we get at the beginning of a new season even if we're not going back to school ourselves. Why not spend that capital on While we're talking about who the church is this month, one thing is certain: it's not meant to be lonely. Church, by definition, is us working together, learning together, growing together, and encouraging one another. We can't organize or program that into your life but we do our best to create opportunities for this to happen intentionally.

And so, Connecting Point. CP is what we call our small groups. It's a strategic point in your week to connect with God and others. It's also a place to train to be like Jesus and find ways to impact your world for Him.

New groups are launching in a couple of weeks and I strongly encourage you to be a part of one. The lineup has lots of options our hope is that there is one that makes sense for you this fall.

Speaking of new things... our CP format now has two streams: Connect Groups and Life Groups. Connect Groups meet for one session (October-November) and group members will choose a new group in the new year. Life Groups meet for the duration of the school year (October-May) and group members will have the option to continue on or choose a new group in fall 2023. The listed group topic will be the starting point for LGs and other books/studies/topics will be added as the group grows together through the year. Be sure you make note of whether the CP group you're interested in is Connect or Life.

Ready to see for yourself? Everything is ready for you on our website including how to sign up and how to get the book or study materials that you need.

We also have some more exciting things available this fall... find out more on the same page on our website:

  • Alpha

  • The Bible & The Issues: Sunday Night Discussions

  • A Fresh Look at Pentecostal Beliefs: A Master's Micro-Course

  • Women's Mentoring

  • Frontline: Men of Freedom

It's going to be a great fall of growing together, church! Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We are here to equip you to connect with God and others, train to be more like Jesus and impact the world for Christ.

Looking forward to October,

Pastor Tracy

Who is Church? (welcome to our new series)

There are so many times in our lives when we need a mediator. Couples go to therapy so there is someone to mediate their communication and conflict. Parents (especially as the summer is almost over) have to mediate fights between their (bored, need-to-go-back-to-school) kids. Lawyers act as mediators between the accused and the law. Sometimes we need a go-between.

When we were in the process of adopting our kids, we had to rely on the mediation of others. We hired an adoption agency that not only facilitated the process, but went to court on our behalf as our power-of-attorney to speak for us. When there were mysterious delays, our MP would call his contact in Canadian immigration and find the source of the problem well before our agency knew there was an issue. We needed someone to advocate for us, to go right to the source, and we were powerless to do this for ourselves.

That’s where we’re starting in this new series that I’m calling “Who is Church?”

We’re starting with the foundation of understanding just how ordinary, broken, sinful people like you and me can possibly know the God of the universe and talk with Him and have Him hear us and respond to us. As miraculous as it is, the Bible actually explains how this is possible.

And looking ahead, this series is going to outline who the church is – the members, the deacons and the pastors. I hope you’ll find it helpful and deepen your understanding of how we are an expression of the body of Christ in this local church.

To start off we're going to talk about the priests this Sunday. Yep, the priests. (But we don’t have priests! I know, stick with me.) And, we're going to be gathering around the communion table together. I'm really looking forward to digging into this with you!

See you on Sunday,
Pastor Tracy

(PS - Spoiler alert... you are the priests. This is going to be good...)

PERHAPS GOD (guest author | Dave Hancock)

A few years ago, I fell in love with the heart of one of the lesser characters in the Old Testament. The son of the king, a warrior prince, and the best friend of the future king – his name, Jonathan.

I was doing my daily devotions with Through the Word Ministries the other day and teacher Sandy Adams reminded me and helped me rekindle my passion for this character.

Jonathan says in 1 Samuel 14:6, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.” I encourage you to read the whole story in 1 Samuel 14: 1-14.

On that day, God did not perhaps help them, He DID. With one sword, one bow, one armour-bearer and ONE mighty God, Jonathan killed twenty enemies and sent the rest a-running.

I am always thinking about what I could do next for God, and I am reminded of Jonathan’s words: PERHAPS GOD. Is there a struggle you are facing, is there a path not yet taken, is there a choice not yet chosen? Well then… PERHAPS GOD? Jonathan grabbed onto His God and stepped forward into battle, into odds stacked against him, and into an unknown outcome, but also into the path of PERHAPS GOD.

Jonathan could have failed and it would have meant his death. I wonder what could be your worst outcome? Or better yet, what could be the worst outcome if you didn’t?

Perhaps today God is waiting for you to take that step; the step that celebrates the PERHAPS.

Time + Fun = Memories (guest author | Margaret Pfeiffer)

As I sit and write this week's devotional, I am at Braeside Camp spending time with my family. Braeside has become my new favourite place to spend the summer. Between services, tuck, swimming and catching up with new and old friends, Braeside has become my summer haven, especially during these last few years of Covid.

I love that I can come here and just relax and spend time with people I care about. I have learned that I don’t always have to do something super exciting or extravagant to make memories or to have fun - sometimes all you need are pool noodles, duct tape, electrical tape, and some imagination. Suddenly a bunch of light sabres have been created and a whole group of kids is running around having fun making memories. This is what the summer is to me - making memories. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like (of course, I prefer it warm and sunny!) but it’s about the relationships that we build and grow. I am an extrovert, so the last few summers have been tough. Not connecting and spending as much time with people was very difficult for me. So, this year I have decided to make up for it and so far, I have achieved my goal. Spending time with people is life-giving for me; it helps to recharge me. If you are an introvert, you likely feel the exact opposite as me and you would probably be exhausted just thinking about my crazy extroverted life. But it doesn’t matter if you are introverted or extroverted - time spent with family and friends is always special and meaningful.

I know that we are already well into August and sadly the summer is slowly coming to an end, but don’t let that stop you from doing something with family or friends to add to your memory bank. You can even take it one step further and find fun ways to make memories that incorporate a fun devotional. I will share a couple that you can do as a family, but you can always Google some ideas. There are so many resources online that you can use and many of them are all free… and who doesn’t love free stuff!

So take some time, have some fun and make memories.

Margaret

What if we followed the Greatest Commandment? (guest author | Eric Jackson)

I witnessed an interaction at work earlier this week that stuck with me. Not in a positive way. Two people, presumably unknown to each other. (It’s a very big factory). A lady carrying a box, a man holding a hot coffee. Add a hidden corner, and you get the result you expect. A collision. No box dropped. Very little coffee spilled. But the reaction? Both were shocked, neither happy. But one in particular looked like he presumed the other had woken up that day with the sole intent of ruining his entire day by intentionally planning a collision and spilling a mouthful of coffee. Total overreaction. Particularly in an environment where you may potentially work with that person someday.

Small incident on a global scale. But it got the wheels turning. There a general unease in society, and I don’t think it’s just in my head. I’ve seen many more examples like this personally. A quick read through the headlines will confirm that violent crime is up.

So what’s going on? Schools send a strong social justice message home with our kids from an early age. Corporations are quick to advertise how virtuous they are, and how you should be too. Most new blockbuster movies have an underlying message. Professional sports teams paint their fields with positive messaging. So how are so many aspects of our society in decline?

Is it possible that the message of social justice combined with moral relativism leaves us in a state of confusion? Is it possible that perhaps we need an anchor to attach our morality to? What would our culture look like if more of us recognized that as humans we are flawed and broken, and perhaps would do well to seek the One who not only created us, but gave us His word to follow, and a path to redemption when we fail?

What would our news sites post if we turned to follow the Greatest Commandment?

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Calling on God (guest writer | Talitha Schroth)

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
— Psalm 145:18

Have you ever had a time when you needed to call on the Lord? It might have been when you were going through a really tough time. Or maybe you just felt the need to praise the Father for everything He has done and will do. If you read through this entire Psalm, you'll find David (surprise! David wrote this Psalm too) doing this exact thing: calling to God in truth and praising Him for His greatness.

You may find it easier to pray to God in difficult times. I'm not saying that that is a bad thing! Please pray in your difficult times - I promise that He does hear you and, no matter what, He will come through for you. It might not be in that exact moment, it might not even be two years from now, but that does not mean He is not listening.

But don't only pray in difficult times. I know that I still sometimes struggle to pray when everything is going okay (no I did not mean to rhyme, it just happened that way). You get through those difficulties and all of a sudden everything smooths out and you don't feel the need to pray at all. It just sort of slips your mind and you forget. Your life is busy and it feels like God won't even mind if you skip that day. "Oh, I’ll make sure I'll get to it tomorrow." But then you don't and it becomes a pattern. It’s hard. I get that. But it’s also important to pray even when you don't feel the need to.

The second half of the verse is about calling in truth. What does that even mean? If you take a look at the verses that surround verse 18 you see the picture that David paints of a faithful God who fulfills the desires of those who fear Him and watch over the people who love Him, but who destroys the wicked. So, what is the truth? The answer is and always will be that God is God and He loves us enough that those who call on him in this truth, in His truth, will be near to Him just as He is near to us. How are you praying in truth today?

Disc Golf Anyone? (guest writer | Erin Jamieson)

As I write, I am sitting by the pool at Braeside Camp with friends watching my kids swim. Sunday night I ate deep-fried pickles around a dirty camp picnic table with friends. Last week I learned about Nigerian wedding culture while having snacks in my living room.  I’ve had a lot (for me) of fellowship the past few weeks . . . and it’s been awesome.

Summer lends itself well to getting together with old friends, meeting new friends, building relationships, and creating community.

Community is something organic that comes from people spending time together, feeling cared for, and being able to open up. You can’t force authenticity and vulnerability; it has to be natural and comes from feeling safe with others.

I am an introvert. I love people but I recharge by being alone. Sometimes I need to remind myself of the importance of spending time with fellow believers outside of the church walls. We weren’t created to be alone; God created us to be in community.

Creating community takes effort, admittedly more effort for some than others. The effort comes by showing up and stepping out. Show up to Sunday services, join Connecting Point groups, and bring your kids and youth to age-appropriate programs.  Those are all important ways to be part of community. But they’re only a few options.

Building community takes effort but it’s worth it. Community outside of the church lends itself to community inside the church. When you need prayer, encouragement or want to join a small group, you are more likely to ask or join when you already know people.

You don’t have to wait for someone to invite you, try doing the inviting. Your house doesn’t have to be a fancy nor do you have to be able to cook gourmet meals to have someone over.

This summer I encourage you to find ways to connect. The weather is gorgeous, the possibilities are limitless and the reward is worth it. My husband is looking for a disc golf buddy if anyone is interested . . .

Pastor Erin

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: 10 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
